Language dominance, an essential feature of bilingualism, is a core concern of a growing number of studies that seek a granular understanding of bilingualism. To give a sense of the significance of these efforts, and to suggest problematic issues and paths for future inquiry, this talk is organized along four intersecting axes: concept, assessment, research, and theory.

-Understanding dominance in bilingualism: foundational constructs and clarifications

    - Assessing dominance: instruments and indices, and their interpretation

    - Dominance as a predictive factor: classic and current research

-Theoretical perspectives on the dynamic character of bilingualism: dominance and attrition, permeability, and entropy

The presentation includes illustrative comparisons of research on bilingual dominance with studies on manual laterality (handedness).
